From the drawing board to tank test, a new Selene yacht is taking shape! The new Selene 62 Clipper was successfully tank tested last week in the pool of the South China University of Technology. This new model inspired by Howard Chen and his design and technical teams is a semi-displacement vessel which will take the Selene lifestyle to the fast lane! The interior will feature the same level of luxury found on all Selene yachts with a beautifully laid engine room designed for ease of maintenance and service. The twin 715 to 1,000 hp Cummins, CAT or MAN engines will allow for a 22 to 27 knots speed as well as for a fuel-saving classic displacement speed of 10 knots required for long-distance travels.

Dual speed hull design

“Dual Speed Hull design” is a unique hull design that combines several innovations in the hull shape and stream line. This hull offers the best of two worlds; it shows stability at low speed and less resistance at high speed, inducing a higher planing speed with less power. This is the result of two years of research by Howard Chen and his Taiwanese naval architectural team with the knowledge of Dr. Wang of South China University of Technology.

The 1/10 scale hull models (one with classic bow and the other with vertical bow) were successfully tested in the towing tank at different speeds up to 28 knots. As Howard Chen said, this Dual Speed Hull Shape design is inspired by an old Chinese saying “静如处子 动如脱兔,” Calm like a virgin, move like a rabbit... This innovative design will be used for several different Selene semi-displacement yachts.

A Selene 60 Ocean Explorer has reached its port of call and is now moored in its shelter! The Selene 60 is the smallest vessel of the Selene Explorer line with all the qualities and advantages of a much larger yacht. Selene yachts are not production boats, but semi-custom, handcrafted, solid vessels that are available to you at comparable production boat pricing.

A first look, the Selene 60 Ocean Explorer by Guido de Groot shows a number of the Selene family traits with her powerful raised pilothouse and Portuguese bridge. She is sure to appeal to existing boat enthusiasts. The Selene 60 reaches a new level of luxury that is intended to compete directly with the finest European yards but with all of the advantages of GRP. Although the Selene 60 can easily be operated by the owner, it has a comfortable crew quarter aft with a full head for a captain or steward, which can also double as a fourth cabin.

There is a big difference between a recreational “trawler” and a true ocean-going passage maker like a Selene. The ability to power with confidence across any sea or ocean in safety and comfort is chief among the reasons experienced boaters go to Selene, whether their adventures are coastal, global or somewhere in between. For more than twenty years, Selene yachts are found all over the world…

The differences include stronger hulls, watertight bulkheads and doors, full skeg protected propeller and rudder, backup bilge pumps, large scuppers, continuous duty engines, and automatic engine room fire extinguisher systems. Knowing that a Selene Yacht owner often has to be both the captain and engineer of the vessel, we have invested a lot of time in the design of our engine rooms, which are regarded in the industry as best in their class with good access, plenty of room to work around the systems, with ease of maintenance and service in mind.

We install only first-class electrical brands for batteries, generators, inverters, chargers, light fixtures, etc. Our engineering team is always ready to assist our owners in the sizing of their yacht’s electrical system with the desired level of redundancy depending on how the yacht is going to be used.

We wish fair winds to the happy owner and captain of Selene 6045. . .

Full Wide Body Layout

This Selene yacht has a brand new styling profile and a layout with three luxury staterooms and en-suite bathrooms. Although the yacht can easily be operated by the owner, it has a comfortable crew quarter aft with a full head for a captain or steward, which can also double as a fourth cabin. Twin or single Cummins or John Deere engines are available for the propulsion system. The interior design is contemporary, similar to the Selene 92 and 72. There are three versions to choose from, “Full Wide Body”, “Port Side Wide Body” and “Standard Two Side Decks.” The yacht being delivered today is a beautiful full-wide body design with a spacious saloon.

While we have just started laminating a new Selene 54 Classic Explorer and are busy building 8 more boats: a Selene 49 Classic Explorer, a Selene 72 Ocean Explorer, two Selene 62 Classic, a Selene 66 Classic, a Selene 45 Classic, a Selene Ocean Explorer 60 and one Artemis 48, we still have space for new orders!

The construction of a Selene 54 Classic Explorer has just started (Hull 54116). This yacht is powerful a combination of live-aboard comfort and excellent long-range cruising in safety for a couple and their guests. Like all Selene Ocean Trawlers, the Selene 54 is a serious long-range cruiser. The hull form of the Selene 54 has a hard chine in the aft sections to reduce the roll, but this merges into the traditional displacement boat’s round bilges by the mid sections, giving the Selene 54 its impressive range of more than 2,000 nautical miles. Her shape below the waterline and single engine create a fuel-efficient package and the big slow-turning prop responds instantly to increases in the throttle and increases maneuverability.

A True Ocean-going Passagemaker

There is a big difference between a recreational “trawler” and a true ocean-going passagemaker like a Selene. The ability to power with confidence across any sea or ocean in safety and comfort is chief among the reasons experienced boaters go to Selene, whether their adventures are coastal, global or somewhere in between. The differences include stronger hulls, watertight bulkheads and doors, full skeg protected propeller and rudder, backup bilge pumps, large scuppers, continuous duty engines, and automatic engine room fire extinguisher systems.

Best Engine Room in Their Class

We design and build our yachts, in our factory from the first drum of resin and roll of cloth to the upholstery of the salon! We do not subcontract the work to a third-party “partner shipyard” like many other brands. We have built over 450 yachts to date. Knowing that a Selene Yacht owner often has to be both the captain and engineer of the vessel, we have invested a lot of time in the design of our engine rooms, which are regarded in the industry as best in their class with good access, plenty of room to work around the systems, with ease of maintenance and service in mind. Our yachts maintain their value because of the quality of construction and materials used. Twenty years after launching, the interior of a Selene Yacht will look as good as new.

Selene Yachts are everywhere in the world! A few days ago we received amazing photos from our French « Selene ambassador », captain Joël Marc who is cruising in Alaska for three years with his Selene 66 “Jade”; let’s meet today a wonderful couple from Australia, Colin and Natalie, who are crisscrossing the Mediterranean Sea. This is only the beginning of their voyage… their Selene 66 “Saved By Grace” is ready for a circumnavigation, just like them! We are delighted and proud to have two new Selene ambassadors in our fleet of 450 Selene yachts all around the world…

« Our journey begins! I started looking for boats that could take me around the world. »

It seems like an age ago now, when Natalie and I were sitting on the rock wall in Mooloolaba, Australia, looking wistfully out over the Pacific Ocean, wondering when our turn would come. We’d both been through some tough times when we met, both having come to the realisation that life is short, tomorrow is never guaranteed and that we needed to truly embrace the expression: ‘carpe diem’. I had felt a call to the ocean as long as I could remember but also to the skies (It turns out that I’m a bit of an adventurer at heart). As a helicopter pilot, one of my favourite jobs was flying marine pilots out to the ships coming and going through the Great Barrier Reef. It was in this role that my yearning for travel and adventure was stoked again, and I started looking for boats that could take me around the world.

« I needed a boat that was safe, stable, had excellent range and affordable. »

My research started with sail boats, particularly catamarans. They seemed to have good stability, sizeable accommodation, and twin engines. However, it struck me that in the event that I needed to single hand sail it, it could be difficult and a workplace injury had left me feeling that the prudent course to take would be a motor vessel.
I needed a boat that was safe, stable, had excellent range and affordable. I wasn’t sure one existed but before too long a couple of brands appeared to tick these boxes and rose to the forefront.
Most people will have heard of Nordhavn when looking for the trawler type boats and this is the brand I was considering when I met Natalie and she was all for it. Finally, after wrapping up things in Australia, fast forward a few months, and our time had come to jet off to the US via Hawaii to look at a few Nordhavn models. We arrived at the head office and made an offer on a 52ft model. As COVID was still playing havoc, stock was low and there wasn’t much to look at and prices were high. We then flew to Florida to look at the 55ft model. It was in Florida that our search took an unexpected turn. There we met the guys from Yacht Tech Inc. They sell used Nordhavn’s but happened to have a Selene to sell. They pushed us to take a look, but we were rather reticent. Afterall, it’s not a Nordhavn… We finally agreed to look, but only after the bribery of a free lunch.

« Selene absolutely wins for the liveaboard in this size range. »

Wow! We weren’t expecting this. We were more than pleasantly surprised by the layout, the quality of craftsmanship, the solid feel and the value for money. It was hard to believe. Was it too good to be true?
I’m quite tall (6ft 4) and found the Selene’s much more accommodating. There’s room to stand up in the showers and still have headroom. Not so with the other boats we’d seen. The layout in the Selene was also much more conducive to onboard living, which we intended to do. We love the open space and fluid design, being able to see a long way forward and into the pilot house from the saloon. Natalie had watched me walk around the Nordhavn’s, ducking and weaving and hunching to get through doorways, engine rooms etc. In the Selene I can walk around comfortably with virtually no need to mind my head! This was a no brainer. Selene absolutely wins for the liveaboard in this size range.

« After looking at a couple of boats, we finally settled on a Selene 66 »

So, was it too good to be true? James, the owner of Yacht Tech Inc knew a couple who had previously owned a Nordhavn but had since bought a Selene. For them it came down to the ‘ride’. They said they found the Selene a superior ride and one of them wouldn’t go back! High praise indeed. The Selene for sale in Florida didn’t quite meet our needs. It didn’t have the range as our intention is to cross the Atlantic and the Pacific with fuel to spare. It also needed some work done that would have delayed our plans. However, with our eyes opened to the quality of the Selene, we cast our net wider to look for the Selene that was right for us. This search led us to the Mediterranean and ultimately, France. During our search, we had also considered buying a brand new Selene. Their build times are very good and we were very tempted! But as we wanted to start our adventures as soon as possible, we decided to go with a readily available option. But we’d love to buy a new model in the future. After looking at a couple of boats, we finally settled on our Selene 66 (22m), on the South Coast of France and bought it in April of this year. We renamed it “Saved By Grace”. It has sleeping for 8, a good size saloon, well equipped galley and lots of outdoor space for cruising and relaxing. We also have a crane for the 6 person tender, which easily fits on the fly deck, with plenty of space for sun lounges. So, we ended up with a much bigger boat and better value for money than expected. We feel very blessed and already have fond memories of enjoying our sundowners in France with friends and family!

« We completed the theory online in Scotland, and the practical component in England. »

Before we set off on our travels, we decided to have some maintenance work done and to replace some components for our own peace of mind. The surveyor was very helpful and very thorough. We’re glad he spoke some English. It was a bit daunting having to arrange services in a non-English speaking country but most things worked out well in the end. There were also some delays with getting the boat ‘de-flagged’ in France and then registered in the Cayman Islands. So, we decided to make best use of the time and went to the UK to do our Day Skipper Power Boat course. We chose this option as it leads to an ICC (International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft). This is a recognised qualification throughout the Mediterranean and can avoid embarrassing questions in different countries expecting to see certain standards, even though the Cayman Islands doesn’t require them, nor does our insurance. As it turns out, Montenegro (our current location) accept the skippers licence from RYA as proof of competency. Anyway, this was time well spent and we’re glad we did it. We learnt lots and can highly recommend BH Marine. We completed the theory online over two weeks in Turnberry, Scotland overlooking the Irish Sea, and then undertook the four-day practical component in Portland, England. We are much better equipped than we would have been! The delays turned out to be a godsend.

« We look forward to sharing our experiences with you soon. »

When we arrived back on the boat, we discovered that our berth in the marina was leased to someone else and that we couldn’t extend it. We literally had just a few days to provision, find another marina and plan our trip on a boat we’d never really used before. The sum of our experience was taking the boat out on its sea trial… gulp! Needless to say, we’ve had some learning curves since. We look forward to sharing our experiences with you soon. But we’d like to leave you for now with the encouragement to follow your dreams. Hurdles can be overcome and you will learn along the way but every journey begins with the courage to take that first step. Even unexpected ones!

Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, close to the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Bering Sea and the Bering Strait. Farther than that is the North Pole! And this does not scare our Selene ambassador, Captain Joël Marc and his Selene 66 “Jade.”

The story of “Jade” must not be missed. It is told extensively in “Neptune”, the famous French nautical magazine, an equivalent to the American “PassageMaker” (see the full article in our Press section). Jade is a beautiful Selene 66 Yacht launched in 2005. For several years, her French owner and captain, Joël Marc, has undertaken a long voyage beyond the horizon, from New Caledonia in the Southern Hemisphere to. . . the rest of the world!

A Selene Ambassador

This amazing French man, Captain Joël Marc, is a modern Phileas Fogg, Jules Vernes’ adventurous globetrotter! He is a retired doctor who has criss-crossed the Pacific Ocean, exploring wild islands and remote human settlements. He is our Number 1 blue water traveler and adventurer with his Selene 66 Explorer. For years, he is roaming the seven seas in the wake of famous French mariner Marin Marie, the pioneer of passage making under power on his motor yacht “Arielle” in 1936.

Joël Marc’s Selene 66 and its single 610 hp Cummins engine performed flawlessly through the years and “Jade” crossed safely these remote waters familiar to Alaskan crabbing boats. Captain Joël met a few other motor yachts along the way but very few sailboats dare to venture in this area, which is a trawlers’ territory.

A perfect explorer

The Selene 66 brings together quality, comfort and long-range capability (a twin-engine version is also available). The well-thought layout consists of a three stateroom arrangement with crew quarters aft, all with private heads. The owner enjoys a full-beam master stateroom complete with writing desk, vanity and full-height wardrobes, not to mention a roomy pilot house with a commanding view and a professional engine room.

Joël Marc has added a few things to his Selene 66: a longer anchor chain, a large array of solar panels for recharging the batteries and a water maker which is a critical piece of gear on any long-distance yacht. Captain Joël Marc runs the water maker as soon as they move and even at anchor so the tanks are always full of fresh water. As he writes: “For me, traveling on my motor yacht means absolute freedom. I go where I want, I leave when I want, and I stay as long as I want. . . What other means of transportation but a yacht can provide such happiness and independence? Jade is our home from home, with our books and music library, friends and family. . .”

Amazing photos

Selene Yachts have proven since 1989 that they are true exploration vessels built to last and to endure the worst waters and weather. From New Caledonia, in the Pacific Ocean, his hometown, to Japan and Alaska, Captain Joël Marc has never been scared of any ocean passage and weather!

Alaska has many glaciers, some of which can only be seen from a boat. Captain Joël has just shared with us some amazing drone photos of his most recent cruise in this remote part of the world.

We, Selene people, are proud of Captain Joël Marc. He inspires us. . .

Selene best seller

Alongside the Selene 66 Explorer and 42 Voyager Sedan, the Selene 60 is for a couple of years one of our best-sellers! This yacht shows a number of the Selene family traits with her powerful raised pilothouse, Portuguese bridge, and bulbous bow, but a contemporary twist is also apparent in the addition of the large side windows in the hull. She is sure to appeal to existing owners and boat enthusiasts alike and takes the simple and proven concept of the fuel-efficient and seaworthy long-range yacht to a new level of luxury that is intended to compete directly with the finest European yards but with all of the advantages of GRP.

A few days ago, our most recent Selene 88 Fishing was launched. Beside the fact the yacht looks beautiful on the water and sits perfectly in its lines, the sea trial was very conclusive! At 2,130 RPM the twin engines Cummins QSM 455HP and their ZF 360 2,917:1 gear box, pushed the boat at 12.75 knots in the Pearl River and the North China Sea. And at 1,500 RPM and 34% engine load the average speed was 10.35. knots, which is perfectly adequate for long ocean passages. Final commissioning and touch-up of this vessel will now take place at our docks before delivery to her happy customer. The gyro stabilizer did the job as expected, the fuel burn and the noise level in the cabin were within range. Howard Chen and his team were doing their job in a beautiful sunset in Zhuhai Selene Shipyard. Another Selene Explorer is ready to roam the Seven Seas. . .
