Inspiring the Next Generation: Hong Kong Students Visit Selene Yachts Shipyard
At Selene Yachts, we believe the future of the marine industry depends on inspiring young people to discover the craftsmanship, engineering, and passion behind boatbuilding. We were delighted to recently welcome a special group of students and parents from Hong Kong to our Zhuhai Jet-Tern Marine Shipyard for an educational tour organized by The Hong Kong Institute of Marine Technology.
A total of 53 students and parents made the journey from Hong Kong to our shipyard. These students had participated in the 15th National Marine Vessel Design and Manufacturing Competition, it is the highest-level, largest-scale, and most widely covered competition in the fields of shipbuilding and offshore engineering and marine science in China. Nearly 400 participating organizations and over 12,000 teachers and students participate annually, and it has developed into an important platform for advancing the construction of a strong maritime nation in the new era, discovering and cultivating marine talent, supporting high-quality development of the shipbuilding industry, and promoting students’ innovative practice learning and exchange. The winners earned the opportunity to visit shipyards and marine industry companies across China, and we were proud and grateful to be included in their itinerary.
Warm Welcome and Introduction
The group was welcomed in our meeting room at the new facility. Our team provided an introduction to Selene Yachts ’ history, our range of ocean-going trawlers, key insights into the marine industry, and — of greatest interest to the students — the principles of yacht design that guide every Selene model.
Behind-the-Scenes Factory Tour
The visitors were then divided into two groups for a comprehensive production line walkthrough. They followed the full journey of a Selene yacht from concept to construction, including:
- Mould making and the design process, including tank testing
- How the first mould for a new model is created
- Lamination of the three major components — hull, deck, and flybridge
- How these three large pieces are carefully joined together
- Visits to the wood carpentry workshop, metal fabrication area, and fitting zones
Throughout the tour, the students asked thoughtful and insightful questions, clearly demonstrating their genuine interest and passion for boats and marine engineering. It was truly encouraging to see the next generation so engaged with the craft of yacht building.
A Glimpse of the Finished Product
After the factory tour, a smaller group of students was taken to the pontoon to view one of our almost-completed yachts. Seeing a vessel in its final stages — after witnessing the earlier production steps — left a strong impression. Many of the students expressed amazement at how all the individual processes come together into a finished, ocean-ready yacht.
Souvenir Exchange and Lasting Memories
We concluded the visit with a warm souvenir exchange with representatives of The Hong Kong Institute of Marine Technology, expressing our appreciation for their important work in nurturing interest in the marine industry among young people. In return, they presented us with a beautiful sextant — a meaningful and elegant gift that we were delighted to receive.
The day ended with a group photo at the pontoon, capturing a memorable moment for both the students and our team.

Moments like these remind us how important it is to share our industry with the next generation — and how rewarding it is to see young people inspired by the world of boats and the sea.
